ID.me and eBay Motors Team to Create The 5-Star Program, Offer Military Discounts with Top Brands Through December 31st

November 19, 2013

Now that Veterans Day is behind us and just in time for the upcoming holiday season, ID.me has teamed with eBay Motors in creating an exclusive military and veteran discount program called the 5-Star Program. ID.me is a leading digital identity solution-provider while eBay Motors is the premier site on the Internet for vehicles, collector cars, parts, and more. In creating the 5-Star Program, ID.me and eBay Motors have constructed unique program that offers members of the military community access to special military promotions from brands such as Under Armour, uShip, and SiriusXM.

To take advantage of these great promotions, simply verify your military affiliation with Troop ID powered by ID.me, the first digital ID card for service members and veterans. If you’re new to Troop ID, it’s a simple, easy, and secure process that will allow you to manage your digital privacy while enjoying the recognition and programs that come with serving in the military. And there’s no better time than right now to sign-up as the 5-Star Program is already in effect and will be running through December 31st, 2013.

Beyond simply offering great discounts for you and the other members of the military community in your life, the 5-Star Program is a part of “The Road Home” initiative, a partnership between eBay Motors, West Coast Customs, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA). Through “The Road Home,” these organizations have created a unique opportunity to share the stories of four special veterans, their remarkable journeys back to civilian life, and four incredible cars that will change their lives. The 5-Star program is a complimentary effort intending to recognize the broader military community.

Troop ID makes the 5-Star Program possible by allowing customers to verify their military affiliation and then relaying a trusted response to retailers. As ID.me Co-Founder and CEO Blake Hall explained, “Many retailers wish to recognize current and former service members with special military loyalty programs but without the ability to digitally verify an individual’s military credentials those same brands are exposed to significant fraud and abuse. As a trusted credential, Troop ID allows brands to honor and recognize military service in an easy to use and secure way.”

Service members, veterans, and families wishing to participate or learn more can visit www.ebay.com/TheRoadHome.  A new video telling the story of each featured veteran will be posted weekly through the end of November.

Save 30% with Ocean State Job Lot Miliary Appreciation Discount Days This Week: Oct. 21-23, 2013

October 21, 2013

Ocean State Job Lot, a retailer with 110 stores throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Vermont and New York, is offering a huge pre-Veteran's Day savings event for the military community called “Operation: Thank You.”

From today, October 21 through this Wednesday, October 23rd, all active duty, National Guard, Reserve and retired military personnel, veterans and their immediate family members and dependents will receive a 30 percent discount on their in-store purchases. All products are eligible for the discount with the exception of generators, luggage, propane and fine area rugs. You can save 30% on household goods, apparel, pet supplies, seasonal products such as gardening and outdoor, and kitchen pantry staples that are already being sold at a fraction of their typical price.

All Ocean Job Lot stores are participating in the appreciation event — to find the store nearest you visit the handy Store Locator.

Military ID is required for the offer, which puts military families and veterans at a disadvantage as they are once again forced to display sensitive personally identifiable information in order to receive the discount.

For service members, the requirement to present a military ID at the point of sale increases the risk of a sensitive federal credential being left behind by accident. For veterans, the requirement to present a DD Form 214 increases the risk of identity theft due to the vast amounts of sensitive personally identifiable information listed. For military spouses and families, the problem of even proving their affiliation leaves them undeservedly out of the loop.

Troop ID and TroopSwap solve this problem by allowing merchants to know that a customer really is a part of the military community without revealing any sensitive information about that customer. If Ocean State Job Lot used TroopSwap to offer this promotion and spread the message about the great discount, members could just show their TroopSwap voucher and provide any government ID with a matching name, such as a driver's license. That way, members of the military community would be able to leave sensitive documents like DD214s at home safe where they belong!

ACME Markets Offers 10% Military Discount Through Thursday, October 10th

October 9, 2013

Acme Markets is hosting Military Discount Days through Thursday, October 10, 2013 offering a 10% discount to active duty and reserve military personnel in response to the government shutdown. ACME operates 116 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland. Find the store nearest you here.

"Acme wants to support our military families,” said Jim Perkins, president of the company based in Malvern, Pa. “This is our way of thanking our active duty and reserve service men and women for the sacrifices they and their families make every day in serving our country."

Families presenting a valid military identification card at the time of check-out will receive a 10 percent discount on their entire grocery bill, excluding non-grocery items like prescriptions, alcohol, tobacco, money orders, postage stamps, lottery tickets, wire transfer services, gift cards, phone cards and fuel.

One major drawback of this otherwise excellent promotion is that it applies only to active duty and reservist military personnel, leaving military spouses, veterans, and retirees out of the bargain. Check out this Facebook exchange about the promotion:

We all know that it's difficult to offer a military discount like this to the rest of the military community due to the lack of a military ID card. Veterans have their DD214s, but those documents contain lots of sensitive personally identifiable information that most folks don't want to expose just to save 10%. And military spouses don't even have that credential to fall back on! What's the solution to this? TroopSwap and Troop ID of course! Wouldn't it be great if ACME Markets offered a military discount promotion on TroopSwap.com where members could print off their 10% savings coupon? Then, they'd just show it at the register with any photo ID to match the name on the TroopSwap voucher.

This way, the discount could easily be extended to the rest of the military community, and because of TroopSwap's gated system, ACME would know that the 10% was really going to those folks who deserve it. We love this idea, and if you do to, let ACME know! The phone number at their corporate headquarters is 610-889-4000.

The discount applies only to groceries, and not things like stamps or alchohol and tobacco.

Report Indicates Veterans At Higher Risk For Identity Theft

August 8, 2013

A December 2012 report by ID Analytics found that veterans have a higher risk-ratio for identity theft than non-veterans located in the same geographic areas. While the VA has come under fire for security breaches, another cause of the problem may be that Veterans typically don't have an alternative to identity themselves outside of a Form DD 214, which lists the Veteran's Name, Date of Birth, SSN, and Blood Type. At ID.me , this report doesn't come as a suprise for retailers commonly ask to see a DD 214 to give discounts to veterans. While the intent of these programs is laudable, veterans end up exposing highly sensitive data to cashiers, waiters, and clerks across the country all to save 10% on a bloomin' onion.

At ID.me, we've built bank-grade information security and a secure, privacy-enhancing digital identity solution so that veterans can claim discounts from military-friendly brands without having to disclose their entire life's history. Learn more at: www.ID.me

Good News for Military Spouse Employment!

August 6, 2013

Good News for Military Spouse Employment!

At TroopSwap and Troop ID, we love our Military Spouses and know what valuable employees they make. Now, it looks like other companies are getting on board with these terrific men and women. The Department of Defense Military Family Readiness announced today that military-friendly employers have reached the goal of hiring 50,000 military spouses two years early!

The Military Spouse Employment Partnership, which began as an Army program and expanded to all military spouses in June 2011, has been working to build relationships with employers to decrease the 26 percent unemployment rate military spouses face nationwide.  It is an important milestone to hire the 50,000 spouses well ahead of 2015, the original goal of the MSEP.

Over a quarter of military spouses are unemployed nationwide, and 77 percent of them want or need work.  More than 180 employers have joined the partnership to change that discrepancy. Over the last two years, the companies have hired more than 50,000 spouses. That’s a 56 percent increase since November, when the number of spouses hired had reached 32,000. And in less than a year, the number of military-friendly companies who have joined the partnership has also increased from 129 to over 180.

First lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Biden, have been touting the benefits of hiring veterans and military spouses as they travel around the country (and even gave a special nod of approval for TroopSwap and Troop ID military spouse hiring practices!).

Along with many other military-friendly businesses, we've pledged to:

• Increase employment opportunities for military spouses

• Help spouses stay employed as they relocate

• Provide promotion opportunities for spouses

• Support pay equity for spouses based on their level of training, work experience, accomplishments and credentials.

Are you a spouse looking for a new career opportunity?

As of this writing, there were 124,527 active job listings from these companies on the Military Spouse Employment Partnership career portal.

Several companies that are part of the MSEP and have taken initiative to seek out veteran and military spouse employment include AT&T, Starbucks, Dish, Coca-Cola, and more.

Just in Time for Back to School: Overstock Beats Amazon on Book Prices + Free Club O Military Discount

Just in Time for Back to School: Overstock Beats Amazon on Book Prices

Overstock.com announced last week that it would be undercutting Amazon book prices by 10 percent!

In an effort to help students gear up for classes, and give bibliophiles a reason to rejoiceOverstock dropped the prices of 360,000 titles (three times the size of Barnes & Noble's stock) by 10 percent below Amazon.

You may not have realized Overstock even sold books. But they've got a huge book selection. If you've been waiting for Dan Brown's "Inferno" to come out in paperback, you might want to check out how much the hardcover is selling on Overstock: with an original price  $29.95, you can grab the book for $10.48 right now!  That's a 65 percent savings on a relatively new best seller!

Picking this fight with Amazon is a risky business, of course, but, as Overstock CEO Byrne said, "It's all part of the game "As my old football coach used to say, it's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog," he said.

Does Overstock have plans to battle with Amazon on other products? "We are already 9 percent cheaper than Amazon on other products," Byrne answered. "We have better customer service, and we're nicer people."

ID.me Privacy and Data Security Policy: Putting Users In Control

July 23, 2013

As a digital identity network, ID.me is designed to empower you to prove who you are and other things about you that are true while you are online. We also act as a trusted intermediary to brands so they are protected from fraud. Matt, my co-founder, and I are both former Army Rangers. Matt served four combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan while I completed a 15 month combat tour in Iraq. We started ID.me with a product called Troop ID because we noticed that service members and veterans couldn't access benefits online. As we built this service for the military community, we observed that no one has a digital service they can use to prove their identity and group affiliations while they are online. From this simple observation, we decided that we would expand Troop ID so that you would have the option to prove who you are while you are online -- if you so choose -- in order to make online interactions more trusted, secure and privacy enhancing.

At core, our solution is designed around the following principles:

  • You, and only you, should control how your information is shared online
  • You should be able to quickly, securely prove your eligibility online
  • You should have the right to minimize the data you are asked to share
  • Your data should only be shared with your explicit permission

On a larger scale, ID.me in particular and digital identity in general has the potential to drastically enhance privacy while reducing the amount of information exposed when you attempt to claim a discount or to gain access to a program intended exclusively for your community. For instance, when you enter a bar, you have to show your drivers license, a credential that typically displays your Name, Picture, Address and exact Date of Birth even though the bouncer only really needs your Name, Picture, and a trusted response that confirms you are over 21 years old. This problem is worse for military veterans who often have to use a Form DD 214, a form that lists their SSN, Name, DOB, Hometown Address and even their blood type, in order to get a discount from a local retailer because they don't have a physical ID card. ID.me solves this problem by verifying eligibility, protecting and encrypting the member's data and only releasing the minimum amount of information to an organization in order to accomplish the purpose of the transaction. For retail discounts, this typically means returning just your Name and a "Yes/No" response as to your group affiliation.

Ultimately, our goal is to make the web a trusted place by putting you in charge. Our team has built a best in class identity solution with bank grade security that utilizes a FIPS 140-2 validated encryption solution, AES-256 bit encryption at rest, and RSA-2048 bit encryption to secure information in transit. We follow the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC) Fair Information Practice Principles (FIPPs) and the Federal Trade Commission Privacy Framework in order to incorporate Privacy by Design into our applications.

First Responders, Military, Veterans and Students can find more offers at www.ID.me while special offers exclusively for Military and Veteran families can be found at www.TroopSwap.com We're very glad to have you as members and we hope you communicate, send feedback, or otherwise engage with Matt and me at Matt@ID.me or Blake@ID.me

ID.me Provides Digital ID Cards to Military, Veterans, Students and First Responders

July 14, 2013

On July 7th, ID.me, a digital identity network that serves Military, Veterans, First Responders, and Students, debuted in order to allow eligible individuals to claim discounts and benefits online while protecting brands from fraud. TroopSwap is proud to have played a pivotal role in the development of this identity network, for the verification technology that underpins ID.me was first deployed on TroopSwap in August, 2011. The technology effectively allows eligible members to attach verified group affiliations -- Military, Veteran, First Responder, Student -- to the e-mail and password they use while signing up for their ID.me account. Once verified, the e-mail and password chosen by the user becomes a digital ID card that allows the account holder to verify their group affiliation to a third party brand through a Single Sign On process that works similar to checking out with PayPal. National brands like Under Armour, Overstock, Sam's Club, Veterans Affairs, Tough Mudder, 5.11 Tactical, WWE and uShip utilize ID.me's verification technology with many more joining the ID.me network. TroopSwap is proud to have played a founding role in the development of this important technology that empowers special communities. Check out www.ID.me to find out more.
